History

The emeralds' beauty has been admired for centuries, and its color attributed to the royalty. Cleopatra took more care of her emeralds collection than other, and just until late 1800 such collections were discovered and showed to the public.

With the years, emeralds still have represented richness and power. Plinio had said that "nothing is so green as an emerald, and emeralds are the only stones you can admired without getting tired from your eyes." In fact, the roman emperor Neron used to wear glasses made out of emeralds during the gladiators' fights.

The American Jewelers Association declared the emerald as the May's stone in 1912. Since that date, several organizations have done the same and now emeralds are widely known as the stone to celebrate the 20th and 55th anniversaries, Taurus' stone (April 20th - May 21st), Gemini's good luck stone (May 21st - June 20th) and Cancer's stone (June 21st - July 22nd).

The firsts in realizing about the beauty of the colombian emeralds were the spaniards in 1536. The new colonizers took immediately in property of the emerald mines and traded them around the old continent. Its quality turned them into a very expensive gem, superior than others and characterized by its own bluish tint.
